The guest house is located on the banks of Lake Peipus, nestled beneath the knoll that separates the woodland from the lakeside meadow.
The building’s evocative setting, poised between two distinct natural ecosystems, inspired us to interpret the interiors as a threshold.
The house is entirely built of pine logs, interrupted only by wide windows on the facade overlooking the water.
The scent of wood pervades every room, enhancing the intrinsic qualities of the space.
We first visited the building when the structure had just been completed and the windows had not yet been installed. The contrast between the monochrome rough walls and the vivid colors of the sky, water and grass framed by the openings was striking: inside everything felt still, while outside the landscape was constantly changing.
Preserving this contrast became central to the project. To reinforce it, we introduced only what was essential within the pure interior space, making the house both functional and comfortable for its guests.
Alongside the timber, we used quartzite in a similar tone for all custom-made elements: the kitchen countertop and backsplash, the washbasin in the bathroom, the fireplace mantel, the low screen supporting the television and the wall cladding in the showers.
Each element of the project contributes to creating a warm sense of place within this timeless retreat, suspended between the calm of the domestic interior and the ever-changing natural landscape.
